Residence St. Martens-Voeren, Voerstreek (Belgium)

The village St. Martens-Voeren (Dutch name) or Fourons Saint Martins (French name) is centrally located in De Voerstreek, one hill away from South Limburg in The Netherlands, or the French speaking Wallonie, a Belgian region. This is a great starting point for many hikes in the scenery or one of the many sights in the area. The historic cities of Maastricht (The Netherlands), Luik / Liege (Belgium) and Aachen (Germany) are only a stone’s throw away.

Our beautiful residence in St. Martens-Voeren is situated on the edge of the village. The eldest sections date from the mid-sixteenth century and the latest ones from 2006. In order to have the building restored it had to be stripped down entirely, while it was standing on quicksand.

The complete building got mapped out meticulously and after the dismantling the wooden framework was taken to the nearby village of St. Pieter-Voeren (Fourons St. Pierres), where carpenters restored those competently. Finally the old half-timbered sections and buildings made from silex – sandstone – were rebuilt in their original spot and completed with several other residences, realized with similar traditional building methods and ecological principles.

Middle Ages

The residences, equipped with modern comfort, arise around a distinct courtyard which invokes a medieval atmosphere. Surrounding the courtyard a largely covered tour d’echelle in two levels is built. Exits lead to the shared garden and the two lanes.

The last phase is still under construction. This allows visitors to take a look at the wonderful techniques regarding half-timbered restoration and using straw and clay as a filling, as well as the processing of natural products in general.
This type of building, the choice of building materials and the color provide the interior with a primal strength and warmth which is very welcoming. Outside this “nest” the so often praised scenery of De Voerstreek is only a few minutes away.

The village of St. Martens-Voeren and the neighboring church villages offer many pleasant terraces and restaurants.
